A pediatrician since 1997, Dr. Ashir has spent most of his career serving rural Appalachian communities — while building an international integrative-medicine practice focused on autism.

Nearly three decades in pediatrics

  1. 1988–1989

    MBBS, Sher-e-Bangla Medical College, Barishal

    Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery under Dhaka University, Bangladesh (1988), followed by the post-MBBS internship year (1989).

  2. 1997

    Pediatric residency, Metropolitan Hospital Center, Manhattan

    Completed pediatric residency training at this New York Medical College–affiliated public hospital in New York City, and has practiced as a pediatrician since.

  3. Late 1990s

    House pediatrician, New York City area

    Hospital pediatrics — largely night coverage — including Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn and a hospital in New Rochelle, NY.

  4. 2001–2002

    Community Health Foundation Clinic, Man, West Virginia

    Moved to West Virginia, practicing in Man and caring for patients at Logan General Hospital.

  5. 2002–2003

    Welch Community Hospital, McDowell County

    Outpatient pediatrics, the newborn nursery, and inpatient care in one of West Virginia's most rural counties.

  6. 2004–2019

    Founder, Oak Hill Pediatrics, Fayette County

    Founded and ran his own practice in Oak Hill, admitting and caring for patients — inpatient and nursery — at Raleigh General Hospital and Appalachian Regional Hospital in Beckley.

  7. ~2 years

    Chief of Pediatrics, Appalachian Regional Hospital, Beckley

    Served as Chief/Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics for approximately one and a half to two years, and retains courtesy privileges there.

  8. 2011–present

    Tug River Catterson Health Center, Pineville

    Where Dr. Ashir practices today: outpatient pediatric care at this rural, federally subsidized health center — currently four days a week, at 662 Main Avenue, Pineville.

  9. Today

    Center for Autism and Integrative Health, Dhaka

    Founder of the center in Bangladesh and consultant to families around the world on autism and related conditions, mostly through online visits.
